Prepared Childbirth Classes

The prepared childbirth classes assist the pregnant teenager through pregnancy, delivery, and the postpartum period.  The classes meet every Tuesday from 3:30-5:00 at the YWCA.  The teens will receive a free baby item and nutritional snack pack at every class.  After finishing 6 classes, the teens will receive a free car seat.  Mothers must be 19 years of age or younger to participate.  Fathers, family, and friends are welcome to attend all classes.

These classes allow the teens to learn the physical and mental changes they will experience during pregnancy, as well as good nutrition habits and the negative effects of drugs and alcohol.  We will prepare the mothers for the labor and delivery of their child with breathing techniques and coping skills, options for medications, and the first few weeks at home after delivery. Participants will also learn how to recognize the warning signs of various problems, premature labor, false labor, true labor, and knowing when to go to the hospital.

Parenting Classes

The parenting classes focus on the unique parenting skills young parents need to raise healthy, happy children.  These classes meet every Wednesday from 3:30-5:00 at the Bristol Family Resource Center.   The teen will receive a free baby item at every class.  After attending 12 classes, the teen will receive a gift card to Wal-Mart.  The class is open to all pregnant and parenting teens. Babies up to 6 months of age are invited to come, too.

The parenting class topics include infant and child development, soothing a fussy baby, age appropriate discipline, importance of time and play, handling frustrations properly, how to be a parent while living with your parents, budgeting, stress reduction, relationships, first aid, and more.

Support Group

All graduates of the parenting program are eligible to attend continuing support group meetings.  These meetings are scheduled throughout the year to allow the teens to reconnect with their peers and learn healthy living information.  Topics for support groups include:  healthy and unhealthy relationships, child safety, budgeting, job readiness (help filling out applications and interview skills), and first aid.
Classes are ongoing.
